An excellent point and comparison, but there is one fundamental difference between medieval Europe then and medieval Afghanistan today:
During the rise of the post-medieval/modern West, Christianity did not retreat and remains strong to this day. But the European Renaissance - for the better - changed people's perception and successfully pushed Christianity's exclusive claimants' representatives way back to the backseat.
In Afghanistan, the main claimants which recently - the 1880's - institutionalized with the added birth-right male bloodline privileges that become the lifestyle and milking cow of topnotch elite group of intellectuals. Owning and passing it to next of kin such luxurious titles at the national level while selves being on the top layer of society and food chain is extremely difficult to subside because by now, they are the main leaps of belief in control of social wisdom.
In a society where a first-class knowledgeable intellectual such as Mir Abdul Wahed Sadaat - our great author - is unwilling to shave his overgrown claimed holy long hair on both side, public awareness to be on par with Europeans way of progress is the last thing come to mind.
